Two mechanical calculators from the 19th Century

Rediscovery in the cultural heritage collection of the ETH Zurich:

  • a rare 160-year-old calculating machine of the Strasbourg watch maker Jean-Baptiste Schwilgué, the world's oldest surviving keyboard adder
  • a 150-year-old stepped drum calculating machine by Charles Xavier Thomas of Colmar, the world's first successful mechanical calculator
